A Winter Rose

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Bill Watson How to prepare any rose for winter always depends on temperature. In general, if in your area during winter the temperature drops to minus 10 degrees F or lower then any rose bush will need some protection. Note: If you live in a area that has a mild winter then most of the following will not apply. However, the advice on fertilizing and watering in general does. (In mild winter areas a rose never really goes dormant though does require a season of rest). Whether you have a hybrid tea, floribunda, tree rose, miniature or climber the goal is always the same… To protect the crown and roots of the plant from the worst of the winter cold and possible mid-winter thaws and re-freezings. In the case of climbing roses and tree roses you will also need to protect the upper parts (long canes for climbers and top flowering crown for rose standards) as well. Preparing a rose for winter will always start in spring ( yes, I did mean spring). Any rose that has had a long and well tended growing season will be better able to tolerate the worst any winter has to offer. Throughout the growing season be sure to water a rose deeply (allow the soil to dry to a depth of 2 inches or so before watering again, the root system needs air too) and fertilize regularly which will encourage a deep and healthy root system as well as healthy canes and flowers. Roses store nutrients in their woody canes and so the bigger the plant the healthier it will be. Maintain a routine of pest and disease prevention as well as careful pruning to remove spindly growth and damaged or diseased canes. About mid to late August stop fertilizing though do continue to water deeply (never let the roots of a rose completely dry out). About late September stop cutting blooms and allow a few rose hips to develop which will be a signal to the plant that it’s dormant period is approaching. Once you have had a few good frosts, leaves will start falling. Apply a dormant spray such as lime sulfur or a dormant oil spray. This will kill pests and fungal diseases that might try to over-winter on the plant or surrounding soil. It can also help nudge those final leaves off. Rake leaves from around your plants and throughout your yard to prevent the spread of disease or a place for pests to hide. Continue watering only as needed until the first hard frost and the ground is frozen. At this point cover the base (crown) of the plant and the surrounding soil (about 12 inches around the base of the plant) with a thick layer of straw, leaves or mulch and then cover with a few inches of soil. Do not remove soil from around the plant to cover the crown, that soil is needed to insulate the rest of the surrounding roots. Instead, use soil from another part of the garden. Climbing roses require the same protection listed above and in addition will need to have their long canes protected as well. Carefully remove the canes from the trellis, fence or wall they are tied to, lay them on the ground and cover with a thick layer of straw, leaves or mulch and a few inches of soil just like the base of the plant. Tree roses are a special case in that not only do you need to protect the base and “trunk” of the plant but the top flowering crown as well. There are 3 ways to over-winter a rose standard if it is planted in the ground. One, is to dig the plant up keeping a good sized root-ball and “heal” the plant into a large container then move it into a shed or garage for the winter. As spring approaches the plant is brought back outside and re-planted in the ground. The second method is to carefully remove some soil from one side of the plant and bend it until it is laying on its side and then covering the entire plant with a thick layer of straw, leaves or mulch and 3 to 4 inches of soil. This method can be tricky for the novice gardener as there is a danger of cracking or breaking the plant at one of its grafting points. The third method may be the easiest for a ground planted tree rose. First, wrap the entire plant in a thick layer of straw and burlap taking care to fully protect the plant from top to bottom. Secure everything with either clips, string, twine or wire and after taking a few measurements construct a ply-wood box (with an open bottom) to place around or over the plant. Rose standards that are planted in containers are the easiest to care for. After following the advice for preparing a rose for winter listed above, simply move into a shed or garage where the temperature will be milder than the temperature outside. Check the soil now and then to make sure the roots do not dry out (water lightly when needed) and move back outside once the danger of frost has past. Late winter - early spring: When there is no longer a danger of a killing freeze uncover your roses and water deeply if needed. Once new growth starts to appear is when you’ll want to prune. Remove any damaged or spindly canes and prune back healthy canes by 1/3 to 1/2. Then fertilize and follow all the steps necessary to promote healthy vigorous plants for the entire growing season. Always Sell To New Eyes And New Ears

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Rich Harshaw One of the hardest things for you to do as an advertiser to do is to step into your prospect’s shoes and really understand what makes him buy, and to find out how the prospect reacts to your marketing and advertising efforts. It’s easy to get caught up in thinking that just because you spent $14,000 — or $140,000 — on your latest batch of ads that every person on Earth saw the ads and paid really close attention to them. Well, generally speaking, they didn’t. For the most part, people won’t even notice your advertisements until they’re in market for what you’re selling. So its important that you make sure that you always structure your advertisements so that a person hearing or seeing them for the first time has enough information to take action… based on that one single ad. Don’t make ads that run in a series that build on one another until they reach a crescendo. Don’t assume that the prospect already knows anything about what you’re selling. I’ll give you another example from a seminar business to illustrate the point. They offered people a free seminar preview audio cassette to lower the risk, and they would either fax in a request or leave a message on a voice mail. At first, they would send the tape out in a normal envelope along with some information on the seminar. Results were marginal. The mistake was, that by the time they got the tape two to four days later, about 35% of the people had forgotten that they even requested the tape… and the plain envelope we sent it in made no impression to spark their memory. By the time they followed up with a phone call 7 to 10 days after their initial request, a full 50% or more had either not realized that they had the tape, or worse, they didn’t even remember asking for it. A full 5% didn’t remember asking for it even after it was explained to them exactly where they would have seen the ad that they were the ones who made the initial contact. It was assumed that the prospect’s ears were conditioned to expect the message…. when in reality, they didn’t care. The process was then changed to when a prospect calls, instead of going to voice mail, they speak to a live person who takes them through a short script that explains what the seminar is all about. Then they are told that they will receive a preview package in big, long box, and to be looking for it in a couple of days. The package is sent via priority from the post office 2-day mail service, in a 38″ long triangular red, white, and blue mailing tube that commands attention when it sits on someone’s desk. Inside there’s a big envelope that contains the tapes; printed on the envelope is a big “SPLAT” with the words “Beat Your Competition Into A Demoralized Quivering Pulp” and reminds them “The Seminar Preview Audio Tape You Requested” is inside.. Because they are told to be looking for it on the phone, and because the package is so unusual — not to mention the fact they perceive the package to cost a lot of money, they remember us. The follow-up call is much more effective because, just about 100% of the people instantly remember who we are. And they’re all favorably impressed. I It works great. Take this message to heart for advertising, too. Don’t–I repeat–Do not assume that your prospects know anything about you, or your industry for that matter. You need to build a case for your product or service, just like an attorney build’s a case. What kind of people do they put on the jury? People who don’t know a thing about the case. If they find out that one of the jurors does know something about the case, they kick them off the jury. They want fresh eyes. And you’ve got to sell to fresh eyes too. Here’s another example of a company in the pool table industry. They were selling coin-operated pool tables to companies that would place them in restaurants and bars and bowling alleys and so forth. These kinds of companies were called “operators,” and there are only about 5,000 of them in the whole country. Since there were so few operators, relatively speaking, they assumed that all of these operators already knew everything about their tables. However, most of these operators were family owned businesses that had been around forever, and since this company was one of the two major players in the industry, that seemed like a fair enough assumption. The only problem with that assumption was that it was FALSE. They then decided to promote certain qualities of the pool tables…and focused on several of the features that related to the operators ability to MAKE MORE MONEY with this particular brand of tables. They had several advertisements put together that were pretty good, but were received very coldly by this company. “These people already know everything that we’re saying in these ads. They aren’t going to fall for all that ‘our tables make them more money’ stuff. They’ll see right through it.” Well, actually, they were giving them too much credit for knowing “everything” about the industry in general and the tables specifically. Long story short, they ran the ads and got the most overwhelming response they had ever received. By integrating some risk lowering strategies their ads generated hundreds of responses and requests for more information. That company went from a money-losing enterprise to a $7 million dollar profit in only 10 months. How Better Software Is Helping Improve Medical Services

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gabriel_J._Adams] Gabriel J. Adams With the help of better software, medical services on all levels have significantly improved. When you call to schedule a doctors appointment, they will quickly be able to tell you who is available to see you and when. Your entire medical history can also be kept on computer instead of in a file. This makes it much easier for them to access immediately. Emergency room services are for those who need immediate care, so every second counts. The software they use needs to be able to store accurate information for the volumes of people who come in to the ER. This way the patient and concerned family members arent spending their time answering the same questions over and over again. One of the biggest concerns in a medical crisis is finding out if the individual is allergic to any types of medication. Having this information in the computer system could mean the difference between being able to administer something immediately or having to wait until next of kin can be reached and clarify this issue for the medical staff. With the different types of private health insurance, government assistance programs, low income programs, and self pay care, the billing part of medical services can be time consuming and chaotic. Better software can help keep track of the different types of insurance, co-pays, billing, and payment arrangements. Most medical offices and hospitals need to have a way to track the number of patients they are caring for. This helps them determine their income as well as determine the amount of staff they need to meet the ongoing needs of those they offer care for. With quality medical service software this is very easy to do. Inventory is important to all medical facilities so that they always have the supplies they need available. It is also done to help keep an accurate count for controlled drugs. This can all be carefully accessed and documented with the right medical software. Good Health Requires Good Balance

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Evelyn Cole If you are in good health, you’re balanced. If you are sick, you’ve lost some balance, temporarily I hope. Hang with me here. Picture yourself swinging between Yang and Yin over a precipice. When you stop swinging you see a ledge. You stand on it, safely. Now, if you’re unfamiliar with Eastern medicine, consider the Aristotelian Mean. Aristotle advocated following a path between two extremes. If you swing too far in either direction you are apt to get sick. Since I have skimmed the surface of Eastern Philosophy, Aristotle, Stephen Hawkings’ string theory, brain research, religions, meditation, and Western medical science, I am no authority, but I can show you how they relate to good health. First, Yang refers to the masculine, left-brained energy in everyone and Yin the right-brained, feminine energy. When these two are out of balance, things go awry. Acupuncture is the medical practice of releasing blocked flow of energy to regain balance and good health. Obviously, it works. String theory, I think, says everything in the universe consists of strings of energy. Nothing is solid. (Phew, wish I could understand physics!) Brain research shows three major parts to the human brain: reptile, limbic, and neo-cortex. We use our reptile brain whenever we feel our survival threatened. (Explains continual warfare.) The limbic system, our midbrain or early mammalian brain, stores our emotions. We use the neo-cortex for thinking, forward planning and problem solving. All three brains are interdependent and function together. The neo-cortex houses the right and left brain. When either of these is too far out of balance we suffer. You may know, slightly, an accountant or computer programmer who is so left-brained he is practically a hermit. Or you may know an artist who is so right-brained he forgets to pay his rent and is often in some kind of trouble. I think most physicists use all three brains in balance. I may be wrong. Experiments with meditation have shown some amazing results. Dr. Richard Davidson of the W.M. Keck Laboratory for Functional Brain Imaging and Behavior studied the brain waves of some Tibetan Buddhist monks, including the Dalai Lama. He found unusually high amounts of gamma brain wavesbrain waves that increase compassion for others. Compassion comes out of good balance and good health. Bill Harris, Director of Centerpointe, created a sound track designed to create the same brain waves experienced by the Buddhist monks. I have benefited from Centerpointe’s sound tracks. They put my left and right brains in balance and kicked out my shy bone by broadcasting my words subliminally into each ear at different rates of speed. Learning Strategies, Inc. has a program called Spring Forest QiGong that teaches you how to heal yourself whenever you get sick. Guess howbalancing energy! I recommend the book, “Born a Healer” by Chunyi Lin. Finally, there’s nothing like Western medicine when you tear a meniscus or get a concussion, among other off-balance things. In our Western World fear hovers below the surface. The more money and power we have, the more fear. We are not openly afraid. It shows up as anxiety in our dreams and in our bodies. Anxiety is catching, like bird flu. I spent a lifetime hunching up my shoulders, anxiously expecting to be yelled at for something I did wrong. My shoulders finally gave out. I had them replaced. Now they set off security alarms. Sweet revenge? Since you have read this far, you will be fascinated by “Does Mind-Over-Body Healing Work?” It’s an article by an African professor of Western Medicine that begins, “Life is energy, and all living beings are energy beings.” Google the title. You may be surprised by his thesis. Here’s to your good balance and good health. Easter With The Family - Hop To It

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Allison Mueller Easter vacation is one of the best times to gather your family together. However, if youre like most people, you dread an Easter get-together if youre responsible for hosting the whole family. Throwing any sort of family event is an intimidating job, especially when it involves the whole family. You cant be blamed for being rather nervous! Certain tasks will quickly come to mind: I have to clean the house! Should I decorate? And, most importantly, what kind of food should I serve? Picking the a great dinner for your guests can make or break your Easter event, so I have included some excellent tips to help make a memorable event out of your Easter dinner. For starters, remember its always helpful to have a good supply of appetizers to calm your guests appetites as you play hostess . But picking the right appetizers can be challenging. You want to make sure that you have a variety of snacks to please everyone. Rest assured, there are several appetizers that never go out of style such as a shrimp platter, crackers and dip, and an assortment of meats and cheeses. To really wow your guests, you might try putting together a beautiful platter of spring fruits and vegetables. Easter time is a great time to get some of the freshest fruits and veggies of the season. And whats Easter without eggs? Great Easter hors d’oeuvres include miniature egg salad sandwiches and egg souffle. But dont stop there. Put together some deviled eggs and you will be sure to knock your guests socks off. Once youve planned out the appetizers, youll have to start thinking about Easter dinner. This can be challenging because there is no traditional Easter meal like at Thanksgiving or Christmas get-togethers. However, this also gives you room to get creative with your main meal. With no established tradition, you can whip up a unique Easter meal. My family has started serving an Easter ham as a new family tradition. You should also feel free to experiment! There are hundreds of things you can do with chicken to make a perfect Easter feast. You might even think about making one of your own favorite recipies. Are you master at lasagna? Make it! The main course of your Easter dinner gives you the opportunity to be creative and start your own traditions. Congratulations, youve made it through dinner. However, you have to conclude the meal with a bang so that your family will go home raving about your Easter party. This brings us to the dessert: the desert has to be something delicious so that your meal can end on a high note. For this reason I suggest you choose cheesecake. In fact, cheesecake is one of the most popular holiday desserts, no matter what youre celebrating. Whether homemade or store bought, cheesecakes are a delicious way to end any meal. They come in dozens of different flavors such as chocolate, turtle, raspberry, and of course, classic style. Get a sampler set to ensure that theres a flavor for everyone. To make this step as easy as possible, order your cheesecakes online and have them delivered right to your door! Dont let holiday hosting get the better of you! Easter is an opportunity to be among family as well as put your great hosting skills to work. As long as your Easter Sunday includes tasty treats and family fun, you and your family should have a memorable holiday. For Easter, or anytime that youre entertaining, visit Elite Cheesecakes for mouth watering cheesecakes. How To Catch Him and Keep Him - Dating Advice For Women

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Maureen Arnold Hey ladies ever been dumped, had your heart broken or other wise been tramped upon by a man? Of course you have we all have. And we are ALL looking for something just a little bit better (ok, maybe a WHOLE LOT better!) than what we just left. But how can we keep history from repeating itself? How can we start meeting quality men, and then after meeting them, hook them and reel them in for the trophy shot? Well, I have some tips to share with you on that, so put your ears on. Tired of the Bars and Clubs scene to meet the guys? Me too. So lets expand our view for a moment and think outside the box. Here are some great places to meet guys that do not include loud obnoxious drunks, broken ear drums, and the typical pawing Charlie. 1. Co-Ed sports leagues and fitness clubs! Guys love sports, we know that, and they will totally dig a chick that loves sports too. Or better yet how about a part time JOB at the local club?2. Shoot pool! (Ok, this may include the obnoxious drunk, so be prepared)3. Laundromats! Do your laundry on a Friday night or Saturday, its a great ice-breaker, and remember, no granny- panties!4. Go back to school! Check out the classes that the GUYS usually take like engineering, auto mechanics, etc. If you dont want to join, volunteer to be a class aid.5. Get a dog and start walking in the park and bring a Frisbee!6. Go online! There are all kinds of places you can get a free profile (check out http://www.wheretogetthescoop.com for 10 online dating sites that offer free profiles)7. Crash a wedding8. Go to graduations at the local college9. Attend sporting events and football parties at BW3s or your local sports club (goes along w/#1)10. Home Depot or your local Lowes troll the isles, pretend to need help, or attend a free class on how to tile your bathroom floor! Ok so you have met him (finally, right?). Now what? Here is where most of us seem to need the help. One of the most important things a woman can do in a relationship to end it right then and there is to lose her cool. And I am not talking about just flipping out and telling him what a worthless turd he is for forgetting your anniversary. I mean the needy Nancy and the paranoid Patty and the Longing Lucy or Clingy Caroline. Lets go over just a couple tips. Guys want someone who is cucumber cool when they want cool, and tamale hot when they want it hot. The trick is knowing which one they want at which time, right? Exactly. One of the keys to this is following his cues and his body language, and making sure that he understands what you are wanting, looking for and needing, and that YOU understand the same from him. Never ever assume that just because you think you have a relationship, that you do. Lets face it ladies, guys are clueless and we need to accept this. Follow his cues and understand his needs, and give him the space he needs when he needs it. But make sure that YOU get space too, even if you dont think you need it!  Next (youll like this one) do NOT give him everything he wants!! Dont be a pushover! And by this I do not mean to try to run the relationship like a Nazi. I just mean to be unavailable sometimes, hold that proverbial carrot out there over his head just a little out of reach. If you start out giving him everything he wants, you will have to either a) keep it up or b) end it at some point and he will wonder where his wonderful little slave went. Dont start it! Ok, that being said, there is a lot more advice out there for women that is geared specifically toward women. Women need dating advice! There is a guy out there named Christian Carter who has developed and entire program based specifically on dating advice for women, as well as relationship advice once you are in it. Christian Carter offers free newsletters, too, so you do not have to pay for some killer dating advice. www.YouCanGetTheGuy.com. By Tyler Casselman When it comes to online dating many people think that by signing up for just a free membership that they will get good results. The fact is this doesn’t usually work. Unless you write a really outstanding profile your response will be poor. The problem is that if no one signs up for a paying membership to these services then you wont get a response. Some of the big networks like Match.com have hundreds of thousands of paying members. The problem is they also have millions of actual profiles online many of witch are people signed up for free. Now what I’m getting to is that the large services get flooded with tons of profiles, but no one is talking to each other if no one is paying. I’m not saying that free profiles are worthless. I actually recommend for you to sign up for many free basic memberships at the big networks. A really well written free profile can go along ways. For those who don’t have a good profile though your going to have to get in contact with people who interest you. That means you have to pay. There are other advantages to paying as well. If you happen to see someone that you are interested in you can get in contact with them and they can get to know you better. This is really effective if you feel that your looks are just average but have an excellent personality. Lets face it most of us just aren’t models. Most of us just cant write a good profile that will give us the response that were looking for. The best way around this is to simply sign up for a membership even if its just for one month. Then start to contact people that were interested in. If your concerned about the price of the membership then just think about how important it can be for you to find the love of your life.
