Bringing Order to Family Chaos

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Saro Saravanan How well do you know your family? I mean, really.Do you truly understand where each family memberis coming from? What they’re thinking when you’retalking to them? What are their motivations anddesires, and how they’re going to inflict chaoson that institution that you’d like to call”Home Sweet Home”? If all is well with your family and you’re happywith the way things are going, you probably do.If things are not going so well, and you maybesometimes thought that your family was gettinga little bit dysfunctional, then you need to goback to the drawing board and reconfigure yourthinking on each family member. In business, they teach you that to motivate a teamto achieve a common goal, you must first present avision and get everyone to buy into that vision. Then you need to continually remind them of thatvision in a way that inspires them to help youto achieve it. What’s your vision for your family? What does”Home Sweet Home” mean to you? Have you everdiscussed this with your family? The visionneeds to be a common one that everyone canagree to. Clearly, each individual in the family has hisor her own vision of what utopia is to them.Timmy’s thinking Xbox 24×7 and no schoolwork.Katy’s teen crush and Manga books consume her. Joe’s a die-hard sports fan and beer-drinker. And Mary’s happy if she can have some time to herself after she’s managed to put healthy food on the table aftercoming home from a long day’s work at her real job. To achieve a balance and make everyone happy, each must understand what the other’send goal is. Together as a family, resolveto make that end goal possible for each familymember (as long as it is legal and healthy). Start the dialog today and continuethe dialog for a few weeks. Thirteen Step Action Plan For Everyone, That Needs More Business Now

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Paul RR Douglas In my previous life as a carpet cleaner, the winter months of January, February, and March, were faced with fear and trepidation. Not just myself, but everyone in our industry, feared these months. Why? It was always the slowest time of year for this industry. If you think about it for a second, this seasonal slump occurred simply due to the weather. Few homeowners wanted to have their carpets cleaned in the winter months. Sub-zero temperatures, slushy, messy, Spring thaw conditions and post holiday season credit cards bills all conspired to keep the phone from ringing. That put the carpet cleaner, flush with the prosperity of the previous months before the holidays, in a really tough situation if they did not prepare for the slow times. Kinda like the ant and the grasshopper fable. The winter of 2000 proved to be a very good one for me. The marketing push I put on in November and December was carrying me through these lean times. My marketing machine was bringing in a constant supply of new and prior clients for me. However that was not the same for many of my peers on the industry bulletin boards and forums. Many were complaining about how slow it was for them. I just shook my head. Why were they not prepared? I knew it would take them until May or June just to catch up on the expenses they were behind on unless they could make the phone ring now. So I put together what has since become known as the Paul Douglas Action Plan. I took the steps outlined in this plan and modified it to fit any business that needs to blast out of a slow season slump. So with that said, here is the 13 step plan of action for everyone that needs more business now. Flyers: Put out twice as many of your most productive flyers every week for every sales rep in your business. New prospects are the life blood of every business. Without them sales will wither and die. Sales slumps can usually be broken by simply doubling your marketing effort. Direct Mail: Direct mail works. It has been used ever since the invention of the postage stamp. Buy or rent a list of names and addresses of prospects that fit your ideal client demographic. Mail one hundred prospecting letters a week out to this list for every person in your company that needs a new lead. A 1% response means one new client/lead per week. The letter you send out does not have to be perfect. It just needs to be sent. Split testing future mailings will allow you to improve on the letter you mail. So dont worry about the letter you are sending. Just send it. And send it once a week. Follow up: Here is a seldom used secret of direct mail that will at least double the response of your mailing. Call them. People are very busy. Many times they will receive an offer that is irresistible. They are about to take the desired action and BANG! Something sidetracks them. The sales momentum is gone. Your offer is forgotten. Contact the recipient. Jar their memory and convert more sales out of your mailing. This step alone will put you head and shoulders above your competition that doesnt follow up Joint Ventures: One of the fastest ways to build a client list is to use someone elses. Every industry and profession has natural referral partners. These are companies that serve the exact same clients you do with non-competing products and services. Create an exclusive special offer for their clients. Then have them mail this special offer to their list of clients. Now you may be wondering, Why on earth would anyone do this for you? They will do it because it will help them stay in touch with their clients. It will create goodwill for them by giving them such a great offer. You made it simple and easy to do. And you reciprocated and mailed a special promotion to your own client list, promoting their business. In a nutshell a good JV or joint venture consists of the following. 1. A letter of introduction or endorsement printed on the JV partners letterhead, and signed by the JV partner (And yes, you should offer to replace the letterhead that is used). 2. A sales letter from yourself, promoting the exclusive special offer, which you and your JV partner created just for them. 3. A coupon summarizing the offer, as a secondary response mechanism. 4. Your business card and brochure. 5. Mail all the above in the JV partners envelopes (and yes, you will need to replace the envelopes as well). Later in this article I will share with you how to simply and easily find your JV partners. JV Thank-you Gifts: Remember the coupon that was to be enclosed in the mailing? Give your JV Partner these same coupons to give away to their new clients. The ones that did not receive the mailing. Everyone loves a gift. It cements relationships. Everyone loves giving gifts. Most of all everyone loves giving away valuable FREE gifts. Prior Clients: Contact 15 prior clients every day. Let them know you are still alive. Advise them when you call that you are making a courtesy follow up call. Make sure they are happy with their last purchase. Ask them if there is any way you can be of service. In some cases, you may generate new business with your clients. More often than naught, you will find your referral rate soaring after making these calls. Cold Call: Very few people enjoy cold calling. I am one of them. But if I had a choice of cold calling or starving, Ill cold call. Contact 30 cold prospects every day, in the market area you want to work in. Market To Your Clients Neighbors: You just finished your service or delivered your product. Tell your clients neighbors. Birds of a feather tend to flock together. Chances are good your clients neighbor would be a qualified prospect for you as well. Reward Referrals: Offer a cash reward or store/business credit to anyone that gives you a referral now. Appeal to peoples greed and pay them for their referrals. If you currently use a referral reward program, increase the value of the reward. Referral Clubs: A great networking opportunity. The biggest organization that I know of is BNI. In a nutshell a referral club is a group of business owners, like yourself who are constantly on the lookout to help their clients with preferred service providers. The key secret here is to give more referrals than you receive. This is where you should start looking for JV Partners. Service clubs: Join a service club or your local chamber of commerce. Attend the meetings, do the service and volunteer work. This is another great networking opportunity and JV Partner source Shameless Bribe: Offer a strong incentive to use your services now. It will be too late when you get past your slow season. A discount, a contest, whatever, be creative. Your Own Ideas: I am sure you came up with a few of your own ideas to increase business. Implement them Now here is the biggest key. Don’t do one at a time. Don’t just do the ones you like and ignore the rest. Do them all right now. Not tomorrow, not next week, NOW! This is the success law of taking massive action. It doesn’t matter which success guru you subscribe to, they all tell you to take action. Massive action yields massive results. Taking action, even if it happens to be the wrong action, will produce results simply because you created momentum. So take action. Don’t think about it, DO IT NOW! 2007 Paul Douglas. Date Movies - Observing Relationship Behaviors - On and Off the Big Screen

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

By Judy Armes So, you’ve found a new potential partner. You’re observing each other and comparing items from your lists of requirements, needs and wants. You ask lots of questions - he/she asks lots of questions. You talk and talk about your experiences, viewpoints and notions. However some people can really “talk the talk” - but walk a completely different walk. What someone says about his/her values and beliefs may not be as accurate as how he or she reacts or responds to experiences in real life. So, how can you arrange an experience so that you can observe the reactions? The movie industry has provided thousands of opportunities to peer into the dynamics of people’s lives and relationships from a slight distance. And they’ve gotten really good at presenting stories that evoke our emotional involvement - making movies a multi-dimensional experience. Watching a movie together and observing our reactions and thoughts to the story-lines, events and characters provide lots of information about each other in just about two hours. And, there’s a wealth of information to be gleaned beyond just the plot or the content of the films. Movies can spotlight many life-circumstance issues that are important to us but often coast just-under-the-radar early in the development of a new relationship. You can select movie content likely to query issues that are important to you (i.e., fidelity, children, careers, alternative relationship structures, etc.). You can choose movie genres that demonstrate levels of risk-taking, humor-styles or intellectual effort. You can choose movies that reflect values that are important to you, allowing you to observe your potential partner’s response to those values. At the very least, you can enjoy a non-committal evening with a movie that you know you’ll enjoy. The next time you watch a movie together, you might consider making it more than just fun - See if the following hints/questions about choices and movie behavior can add a third dimension to your movie experience. Decision/Action style - When you plan a movie date, who picks which movie to see? When you don’t agree on just one movie title, who makes the final decision? How do you negotiate or compromise? And what happens if one person caves to appease the other? This “conflict” can provide an opportunity to observe a preview about how you and your partner might potentially resolve conflict in the future. Personality/Values - In deciding what to see, you’ll each have an opportunity to examine the types of movies the other person enjoys. For example, some people are only interested in romantic comedies, others only in shoot-’em-up action films. As you and your partner identify which movies you are considering, you can also be noting what your film choice might be saying about each of you. Do you prefer intellectual films, slapstick, mysteries, documentaries, art-films, etc.? What is it about the type of movie you like that provides evidence of personality-style or values? Personal Growth - Can you or your date get value/enjoyment out of a film even if it isn’t your favorite genre? Can you imagine that the character’s experience or challenges can be useful in your own life? The ability to appreciate a story, conflict or circumstance that is seemingly unrelated to one’s experience or understanding could demonstrate a commitment to a broader vision, more expansive thinking and willingness to seize an opportunity for a new experience. Behavioral clues - Is your partner able to concentrate on the movie? Does he/she make frequent attention-grabbing interruptions. Although you may not be able to define the specific behavior, you might find yourself annoyed during in this little two-hour experience. Are you ready for a life-time of it? Obviously, choosing and watching a movie together should not be the only “screening” or “testing” technique you use to determine value of your relationship or the worthiness of continuing to explore its potential. But if you use movies intentionally as an experiment (by consciously observing and discussing your reactions, interactions and behaviors), this micro-event can become a useful potential predictor of future relationship alignment. Finding a “perfect” match in our current busy and transient lives is not an easy task. However, relying on chance meetings with potential partners doesn’t have to be hit-or-miss. Employing intentional and effective (and yes, fun!) strategies can promote the right relationship and prevent the wrong one. Hot Bass Fishing Tips - Practical Advice To Help You Catch That Trophy Bass

Monday, February 11th, 2008

By Todd Lavergne Businesses have taken advantage of the great enthusiasm that Bass fishing has created. Countless folks get hooked, pardon the pun, on this great hobby and have exalted it to a passion and a sport. Resorts, lines and sports gears have been created and many more situations have prospered from these interests. Today, there is an increased amount of people trying to learn and discover what the hype is all about. Bass fishing is more than just catching a fish. Now more than ever its about catching those prized big bass and being able to display it proudly. For people just starting out there are lots more to bass fishing than meets the eye. You will need to learn what type of lures that you must have to enjoy bass fishing. And do you know what the top 3 lures for catching Bass are? Although researchers did not have a particular guideline, a survey was given to pro bass fishermen and it was evident that plastic worms were the most popular and showing up as second and third place were the spinner bait and then the crank bait. However, choosing one of these 3 won’t be sufficient. You need to consider other factors. First, you must decide if it is more appropriate to cover a smaller section of water completely or skim across a greater area as fast as possible to locate fish. A worm can be slower to use, but very effective and is extremely attractive to Bass. They are most effective where fish will school near a certain structure. The problem that usually comes up when fishing with a worm is that you are not able to feel strikes. Usually you are not able to sense them because of a sinker that is weighs too much and a line that is too thick. To help you to get over this problem, it is advised for you to use a variable buoyancy worm using lead strip sinkers. The advantages to this are: The lead will not move on the line and suppress the feel of a soft pickup You can use the exact amount of lead to have the worm action needed The bass will inhale the worm much easier It helps in setting the hook It’s easier to free it from snags The worm can be made to hang basically suspended over the bottom when fishing shallow water. If you want to know the amount of lead strip needed, wrap one strip around the hook and bury the barb in the worm. Watch it sink as you slowly put it in the water, it should barely settle near the bottom. Take a little off if it sinks too fast. You should not use anything heavier than 8-pound mono line - preferably 6 pound. On the other hand, a Spinner bait is able to move faster across the surface and can be bounced on the bottom, put near a tree limb and moved in a variety of ways in order to entice strikes. It is a superb probing lure for the shoreline because of its tangle-free design. Lastly, Crank baits let you go over a lot of water very quickly. Using them, you won’t waste much time checking out a spot. Try using them for finding fish that may be scattered. The most essential thing is, no matter what lure you pick for the particular lake that you will fish on, you should make it as easy as possible for the Bass find it. Drop that lure right in front of them. Scientists have documented that Bass calculate the total energy needed to get their prey. Learn and discover to use at least one of those lures that you would rather use for you to have a great time bass fishing! Apart from deciding on lures, it is also necessary to figure out the best time to go bass fishing. The biggest bass are usually caught between dawn and dusk. First, remember that bass love ambush spots that give sufficient cover from the baitfish. They like to conceal themselves, and surprise their prey. The evening or early morning are when the baitfish are most active. Bass follow the baitfish when they feed because they are less aware of threats when they feed. You will have the greatest success by fishing at these times. When reeling in an underwater lure in low light, try to keep a constant pace once it is set in motion. The bass will like this because it makes it easier for them to find and grab it. The last thing is, you don’t want to go between dusk and dawn when water temperature drops to 50 degrees Fahrenheit or below . This temperature destroys certain terrestrials and aquatics, which stops the food chain feeding. The right time and correct lures of going bass fishing are important factors that must be taken into account. The quality of water and conditions of the weather are also necessary for you to win the game of bass fishing! BBQ Flavors from Wood

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

By Mike Gerardy Alder: light, delicate aroma, excellent for fish Apple: light, sweet, fruity aroma, good for pork andchicken. Cherry: same as apple Hickory: most widely used, strong, hearty flavor, used on beef, poultry and pork Maple: sweet and mild flavor good with chicken, Vegetables or fish Mesquite: burns fast and hot, heavy smoke. Be careful not to use too much. Not used a lot on the competition circuit. Oak: strong flavor, not bitter, second most often used in smoking meat Pecan: mild smoke with a rich aroma. A mellow version of hickory Mixing woods in a smoker is very common. A mix of oak, apple and pecan is terrific on chicken in particular. Beef seems best when smoked with a mix of oak and hickory.CHUNKS, CHIPS AND PELLETS Chunks are the most widely used form of wood used on the competition circuit. This is largely due to the size of the smokers; a handful of chips wont do you any good on a smoker that is 6 feet long. The chunks are mixed in with the coals when the fire is started. As the fire spreads over time throughout the coals, the chunks are ignited, giving you a longer duration of smoke. Once your meat hits 140 degrees the smoke ring stops being formed inside your meat. The meat will still absorb the smoke flavor though. Chips are the favorite of the backyard bbqer, easy to use, dispose of and readily available. Most backyard smokers such as the Weber or Brinkman are perfect for the use of chips. Chips are soaked first, then either put directly onto the coals or into a foil pouch with holes in it, then onto the coals. Small metal smoke boxes are available as well to hold the chips in place of the foil. Hickory and mesquite are the most common types of wood chips available, however almost all types including wine soaked ones are available online. Pellets are made from compressed sawdust. They are thrown directly onto the fire, no soaking. Jack Daniels wood pellets are made from the charcoal used to mellow the whiskey and are very popular. Pellets, like chips can be ordered in almost any flavor off the internet. A little goes a long way with these, and little or no ash is produced. There are some pellet fed smokers out there, using the pellets for fuel as well as smoke, a thermometer detects the need for more fuel and pellets are fed into the firebox. Aside from the flavoring that wood imparts into the meat it is cooking, it also develops a smoke ring. There is a chemical reaction that causes a pink or reddish ring inside the meat. This is very desirable, as the judges look for it in competitions. This pink or red ring about inch below the surface is caused by a reaction of the nitrates and nitrides with the myoglobin of the meat. It is not the actual smoke penetrating the meat. After 140 degrees, the formation of this ring will stop, however the meat can keep retaining the smoke flavor. Remember, it is not the amount of smoke you put into the meat that will get your name called in competitions, it is the flavor. Do not over smoke your meat. The smoke ring adds color, not flavor. Some cooks put their meat on as cold as possible to enhance the formation of this ring. A good smoke ring will definitely help your presentation. Maximizing Space on a Minimized Budget

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

By Travis Boudreaux Do you often have friends, family, or guests over for the weekends and are in desperate need of a spare bedroom? Are you going nuts trying to figure out how to turn that extra bedroom thats never used into an office, yet still wondering how to board guests over the weekend? Or maybe you are running out of storage space and closets are now turning into no-mans-land? Well if any or all of these problems are posing an unsolvable quandary for you and your family, I may have a great solution for you! For this article well take a 10 x 12′ room for our example. First off well discuss optimizing storage space. Stroll down to your local Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, or browse your favorite websites that deal in Home and Gardening products. If you are as frugal as I am youll shop until you find the absolute lowest price on the planet. A couple of Closetmaid Freestanding Instant Organizers from our favorite store along one wall of the room can drastically enhance storage space, and will only cost us about $50 - $60 bucks. For those of us who also spend more than 5 hours a week working at home and in drastic need of office space need not fret. A nice affordable corner desk, also known as an L-shaped desk, can be found at our local Wal-Mart, Office Depot, or local internet store for under $200 dollars. These desks provide a much larger working area, and can be placed in the corner of the room to give an extra 20 square feet of more of open space by arranging it in this manner. And lastly for all of us who love to have guests stay over, but not enough space to dedicate an entire room to this function, an inflatable air bed is the perfect solution. Within the last couple of years inflatable air beds have grown in popularity. One of the latest additions to these great products has been raised air beds. Raised air beds provide an average height of 22 29 inches. Compared to an average 10 12 inches for regular air beds, raised air beds give sleepers a more familiar position, a more comfortable sleeping surface, and an overall better nights sleep. To find these great raised air beds head on down to your local Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or drop by http://www.air-bed-mattress.biz for the latest air beds and great deals. How to Give the Right Best Man Speech

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Michael Schnell So you’re the best man. Your duties include throwing a awesome bachelor party for the groom before he makes the lunge into monogamy. You’re also responsible for helping with wedding arrangements and hanging onto the rings, but wait there is one other thing the best man is responsible for….oh thats right a speech. You know the speech, the speech in front of two hundred of the bride and grooms families and friends. The speech that honors and gives blessing to the couples new found wedding bliss. If you’re a best man in this situation your probably thinking oh it’s just a speech it’s not like it has to be memorable like The Gettysburg Address. This may be true, your words might not have to go down in history but the best man’s speech is extremely important for the wedding. It helps set the mood for the reception. A poor speech can put a damper on the party. If a good speech is given, that can bring joy to all guests this will create a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for the party to escalate. This is why this article offers three crucial points to giving the perfect best man speech. The first and most important point is finding a balance in your speech between humor and seriousness. As the best man you must understand the main goal of a best man speech is to celebrate the love of the newly weds. Make sure in your speech there is a portion doing just that in which you discuss how much you can tell the couple is in love and stress the responsibilities that go along with marriage and most importantly don’t forget to wish the couple a wonderful marriage on your behalf. Now being heart felt and serious is fine but too much is going to bore the party to death. They are going to feel like there listening to an economics lecture. This is where your humor factor comes in. Humor is always a good way to get the party in good spirits and not only that, it will help ease the best man’s anxiety. If the best man sees his audience laughing he will pick up on theier positive vibes and become in good spirits himself, which will only allow him to deliver his speech better. Humor can easily be put into a speech using a joke in the introduction or comparing marrage to something funny in an analogy. The one that will always work is a funny story about the bride or groom before they were married. This a guaranteed laugh. Next is time limit. Your probably thinking how long should a best man speech be. Well put it this way a best man speech should be longer than it takes the DJ to announce you and shorter then a monologue from a Broadway show. This does not mean time should cause you to compromise your speech. If you have a witty or humorous line dont cut it out due to time constraints. I personally recommend a best man speech being no shorter then one minute but no longer than four. Anyone who can find a midway point between that should be perfectly fine. Lastly is preparation. Regardless if a speech is for a graduation or a wedding, a good speech is well prepared. Preparation can be done in three ways. The first is research, now no best man speech doesnt require research like someone going for a PH.D but it couldnt hurt if the best man took some initiative to look up previous best man speeches on the internet or ask someone who has given a best man speech in the past. After you take in all your research you can adopt the points you felt could help your speech and tailor it accordingly. After focusing on research you should focus next on presentation. Focusing on how you present your speech will only make you more prepared and ultimately improve your confidence at game time. The best way to do this is by practice. So practice your speech in front of family, friends and whoever is willing to listen. The more your speech is practiced the better it will be delivered at the party. With practice your only going to become more accustomed to speaking in front of groups of people. When it comes to presentation it is important to work on body language and eye contact. You always want to make sure your hands are not moving too much and your not fidgeting. This gives off that your nervous. Lastly when it comes to presentation always work on your vocals. For example there might be parts of your speech in which you want to stress the words louder or change the tone of your voice. This would be like going from Humorous to serious. You dont want to seem like your reading from a book. Let the audience know by the tone of your voice that your changing directions. If these three crucial points are followed you can rest assure you will give a successful best man speech. The last thing I will leave you with is remember to have fun with the speech, be creative and original. The more you make this speech your own the more confident you will be delivering it. A Quick Guide To Food Allergy Treatment

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Allen_Matthews] Allen Matthews This article has been written for those readers who have already been diagnosed with a food allergy. If you are worried that you may suffer from a food allergy, then your best course of action, is to contact your Doctor or GP and have them help determine whether or not you have a food allergy. They will do this by taking a series of tests to help gauge your reaction. Remember to bring a detailed case history of your previous reactions with you, so that the doctor has a better idea of your condition. An allergy to food is when you have an adverse physical reaction to a food item after eating it. The most common food allergy is a Peanut Allergy, which affects from 1% - 1.5% of the population. It is also possible to outgrow a food allergy over time, however with a peanut allergy, this is rather unlikely. Treatments For Food Allergies As of today, the only treatment available for someone with a food allergy is prevention. That simply means they must carefully watch what they eat, to make sure that they avoid the food that causes their allergic reaction. Your GP or a professional dietician can sit with you and list what types of food you may need to remove from your diet (moreover, they can show you what kinds of food alternatives you can replace them with). Sometimes however, being careful, may turn out to not be enough. Especially in the case of a peanut allergy, an unwanted food item (or even food trace) can slip into your meals by mistake (in one well documented case, a peanut allergic school girl had an adverse reaction to peanuts after her chicken sandwich was mistakenly made using a knife that had previously been used to make a peanut butter sandwich). Adverse reactions, such as swelling around the mouth or a severe rash, must be immediately treated with emergency antihistamines. When it comes to food allergies, the best treatment is to always be cautious, carry a card or a bracelet that details your allergy, and always carry emergency antihistamines. Fishing Lures - Keep Kids In Mind

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

By Shawn Fieseler About 6 months ago, I was forced to find new work since my then present employer decided to close the factory doors. Knowing that the local job market would be packed with potential candidates for any position, I reluctantly took a job working in sales for a local fishing tackle manufacturer. Mind you, the last time I went fishing was with my dad, at about the age of nine, from the shore, fishing for bullhead. Even after expressing to my new employer the concerns I had about not knowing anything about fishing, he still banked on my resume that I would quickly learn. In light of the recent situation, I felt it was the best option I was going to get, and took the job. After all, how hard could it be, right? A month or two had passed, and the fishing season was beginning to swing into high gear. This was a perfect opportunity to gather some much needed knowledge on the subject, and began acquiring all kinds of fishing tackle products. I had spoons, jigs, bobbers, you name it, I was ready for anything… Except for the big brown eyes of my oldest daughter, and the vibrant blue eyes of her sister. The first time I was going out, my kids asked me where I was going. I plainly stated that I was headed out fishing, and would return before supper time. They blankly looked at me with a slight quiver in the lip, and a light scuffle of a foot in the dirt driveway. Obviously, there was a question, and I already knew what it was. “So… you girls wanna go fishing too?”"YEEAAHHH!!!” Not surprised by their response, I simply got them ready for their first fishing trip. Clothes, bug spray, snacks, and another trip to the store to get more fishing tackle. Indeed, my family was ready for an outing matched by no other. We later arrived at the local lake, found a spot, tied up some lures, bobbers, practice casts and nestled in quite nicely in a spot where I read was a good location for Bluegill. The time of year was right, the day was perfect. Yes sir, ‘ol dad here was going to score some major points with the kids, and connect on a level that every parent strives to do. However, after about two hours of fishing, with only a few nibbles, and plenty of I’m bored’s, things were beginning to look pretty grim. Where could have I gone wrong. I purchased just about every color and shape you can think of. I analyzed the time of year with the species of fish, including climate, water depth, water tempature, and lake clarity. About the only thing I didn’t throw in there was my lucky pair of socks. Surely it must not have been time. Perhaps give the fish a couple more weeks of warm weather. Coming back weeks later, I still encounter the same problem. Then we went to another lake two times with similar issues. The fish would nibble, yet I’d get no strikes. I thought to myself - “Maybe you should talk to someone that knows something about fishing.” I didn’t do that the first time ’cause… you know, Im a guy. The following week, I talked to my boss, and even showed him all the tackle that I either purchased, or had taken out of inventory. He sifted through the pile of fishing lures, jigs, split shots, and spare line. “There’s your problem.”"Uh… I don’t see it. I’ve got just about everything you could possibly use.”"You sure do. But, you said you were going for Bluegills, right?”"Yeah. I read that those made great fish for kids, and changed the game plan so my children could have some fun too.”"Well, you see… you have everything here for all other kinds of species, but it’s all too big. Bluegills can’t get these hooks in their mouth. You’re just feeding them.” I quickly pictured the Bluegills in my head, and realized that I was trying to force a hook twice the size of the fish’s mouth, down it’s throat. After getting all excited about going out and landing a monster fish, I completely forgot to gear down the tackle selection for the kids. So he gave me a few pointers (not to mention the correct tackle), and sent me on my way. The perfect test - Cabela’s was holding their annual kids fishing day at the pond located on their property. Stocked with all species of fish, it’s meant to be a day strictly for the kids, and figured that this would be the best time for my kids to make the catch they’ve been patiently waiting for all summer. I told them about the tourney, and they reluctantly said they would go. I re-rigged their poles with a simple bobber, split shot sinker, and size 10 hook (much smaller than the size 1 or 1/0 that I gave them earlier). Sure enough, they were catching fish all day long. My two youngsters caught about 2 fish per hour, a piece. And this time, there were no “I’m bored”’s, and I finally got all those pictures and hugs of gratitude, that I have been waiting for. So remember to keep a selection of tackle on hand just for your kids, even if you have to buy another tackle box. It can easily give you the memories that you’re looking for, and give them the memories they will never forget. Shawn Fieseler - Website and Marketing Director of Willy Lures.
